Elephant Head – Crawford Notch

A tiny 0.3 mile walk up to a grand vista of Crawford Notch.

Since the 1800’s families have been walking up to Elephant Head to enjoy a perfect view right in the middle of Crawford Notch. On the notch side of the notch the view is short but takes in Saco Lake, Crawford Station and The Highland Center. To the south views roll on all the way down along Rt 16 to Bartlett and beyond. This is an easy hike for most families, 0.3 miles to the clearing overlooking the notch. Be warned that it is a open slab and THERE IS NO FENCE, so keep a close eye on any one wandering too close to the edge, it does drop right back down to Rt 16. During the spring there are loads of Lady Slippers and Trillium along the trail as well as a good deal of water runnning in the trail. Next time through the notch take a quick break and go explore one of New Hampshire’s classic vistas.
